The Complexities, Compromises of Battery Life

Smartphone Kodak Klic-7003 Battery life has become the burden and in some cases the bane of OEMs. An otherwise great smartphone is no better than a brick (re: HTC Incredible) if it can't make it through a day of use before it has to hit the wall for more juice. But getting the right mix of features, form factor and Sony Np-fc11 Battery life is an ongoing design challenge, as the handheld computers in consumers' pockets scramble to power larger screens, connect to next-generation networks and power an increasingly robust portfolio of applications.
Certainly applications running on multi-tasking platforms are a big part of the problem, but the mystery of Sony Np-fv100 Battery longevity is a much more complex issue than just the software a smartphone is juggling. The good news is that most of the new technologies coming to smartphones (i.e. LTE, multi-core processors) should reduce battery drain in the long run.
Capacity and PlatformA list of high-end smartphones with top Jvc Bn-v12u Battery lives put together by CNET came up with the following: Galaxy S 4G (1650 mAh), Motorola Atrix 4G (1930 mAh), Apple iPhone 4 (1420 mAh), Samsung Nexus S (1500 mAh), BlackBerry Bold 9780 (1500 mAh), LG Optimus S (1500 mAh).
iPhone - 1420 mAh capacityIf finding a phone with the best battery life was as simple as selecting the one with the largest capacity, judging by this list, the Atrix would be your best bet, right? Not necessarily.
"The best Acer Aspire 5715z Battery life I've seen are the iPhone and BlackBerry," says Avi Greengart, director of research, consumer devices for Current Analysis.
Greengart explains that while the iPhone may have one the smallest Olympus Az-1 Battery of all the high-end flagship phones out there, it actually uses power more efficiently than other devices on the market, mainly because Apple hedged its bet with multitasking. The company had claimed from the very beginning that it was reluctant to add full multi-tasking to its devices because the feature was a major Sony Vgp-bps2 Battery killer. In the end, Apple chose a compromise, which allows iOS to hold a user's place within an app when they want to switch tasks and then picks up where they left off when they re-enter the previous app.
RIM is also very hands-on with the design of its products, Greengart says, noting that the BlackBerry maker personally optimizes its radios for maximum efficiency. He adds that RIM's forthcoming QNX-based platform may produce even better Motorola 5428 battery efficiency than even BlackBerry 7.
But it's Android, the ever-heralded most popular OS in the land that has chosen to compromise battery life for true multi-tasking, thus the larger battery size in phones like the Atrix. "Android... by and large has the worst battery life," Greengart says.
Atrix - 1920 mAh capacityGreengart says that Toshiba Satellite Pro l10 Battery life on Android devices really does suffer due to the way the platform multi-tasks, allowing an unlimited number of applications to run at once, with many users completely unaware as to what's doing what on their phone.
Multi-Core and LTE Concerns, SolutionsCarrier execs have been talking for some time now that late 2011 would be the real take-off point for LTE-capable smartphones, with USB dongles and hotspot offerings composing the heart of 4G devices until then. Apparently, they knew what they were talking about. At the time of this writing, Verizon Wireless offers LTE in 74 metropolitan markets; it currently offers three smartphones that support the technology (Samsung Charge, LG Revolution, HTC Thunderbolt), and none of them are dual-core devices.
At first glance, one might think that the combination of a multi-core processor, in addition to an LTE-radio, would lead to further Canon POWERSHOT G2 Charger battery drain, with Verizon Wireless holding off on 4G "superphones" until the technologies have been perfected.
In fact, LTE and dual-core should lead to better battery life.
Ardeshir Ghanbarzadeh, director of services development for Metrico, a company that does independent device performance testing for carriers before those devices go live on the network, says it behooves both OEMs and carriers to keep first-generation devices of any kind relatively simple.
"Olympus d390 Battery drain really depends on the power efficiency of the chipset," Ghanbarzadeh says, noting that at this point, LTE-capable chipsets are still being refined for maximum efficiency.
Ghanbarzadeh says that far from draining more battery, technologies like multi-core processors and LTE, which is spectrally more efficient than existing 3G networks, should ultimately result in better power consumption. Greengart of Current Analysis reinforces this assertion, adding that dual-core processors reduce heat and limit battery drain, which is why they were first installed in laptops and desktops.
When asked whether throwing in a bigger battery might help with longer Casio Qv 770 Battery life, Ghanbarzadeh says it might but adds that there are limitations when you're talking about something that's supposed to fit in an end-user's pocket. "Sure, you could throw a 2500 mAh battery in a smartphone, but you have to consider form factor, the size of the device and the weight of the battery."
Apps' Appalling Appetite for PowerAt a recent investor conference, Motorola CEO, Sanjay Jha, put the blame for poor battery life squarely on the shoulders of the Android Market, saying that Android's ability to multi-task can lead to certain apps remaining open, like those that constantly check location, which in turn leads to battery drain.
Jha claimed that 30 percent to 40 percent of Canon E-550 Battery drain is due to third-party applications from the Android Market and suggested that Motorola would be working on better notification systems, possibly built into Blur, to alert consumers about which apps are open and draining their phone of its life-giving charge.
SpeechCycle, a company that started in 2001 by providing automated customer care for major telcos, is working on just such a solution. Roberto Pieraccini, the company's chief technology officer, says poor Acer lcbtp03003 Battery life is one of the main reasons that new smartphone users call customer care.
Pieraccini says one of the solutions his company is working on would actually diagnose problems with poor battery performance.
"It's an application that is integrated with the device, and once the user says something like, 'How can I extend my battery life?' the application goes into the device and finds out, device permitting, what are the things that they can do for increasing Samsung Digimax v5 Battery life."
Pierccini says that the customer might then be prompted to turn off location services, close an unused application or reduce the brightness of their screen, all of which are major culprits in the consumption of power on smartphones.
What's Acceptable? The Internet is littered with articles that suggest various ways smartphone users can save on Dell Studio 1747 AC Adapter battery life. Most of them suggest adjusting user settings that can be manipulated to conserve power, such as turning off GPS and Bluetooth when not in use, or as noted earlier, reducing screen brightness. And then, of course, users could opt to carry around an extra battery or invest in a battery case. There are even solar-powered cases out there for charging the phone.
What all of these ad-hoc fixes for battery drain mean is that battery technology is lagging behind the rest of smartphone innovation. As OEMs begin packing smartphones with more and more sensors, and features like 3D displays, and developers start writing applications that will leverage these technologies, smartphone batteries will only continue to suffer. Until, that is, major advancements are made in Canon Lp-e10 Battery technology.
At Credit Suisse's Convergence conference in March, Verizon Chief Technology Officer Tony Melone was asked whether there would be any concerns around battery life with upcoming 4G devices. He replied that the company would "optimize it and provide a battery experience that we believe will be acceptable to consumers."
It's worth considering that what used to be "acceptable to consumers" was a feature phone that didn't have to be charged more than twice a week. Then again, how much did that feature phone get used?

'Stretching' Technology Could Improve Battery Performance

Stretching could improve efficiency of material used in laptop batteries, fuel cells and water purification

Designing new materials depends upon understanding the properties of today's materials. One such material, Nafion, is a polymer that efficiently conducts ions (a polymer electrolyte) and water through its nanostructure, making it important for many energy-related industrial applications, including in fuel cells, organic SONY NP-F330 battery , and reverse-osmosis water purification. But since Nafion was invented 50 years ago, scientists have only been able to speculate about how to build new materials because they have not been able to see details on how the molecules come together and work within Nafion.
Click here to find out more!
Now, two Virginia Tech research groups have combined forces to devise a way to measure Nafion's internal structure and, in the process, have discovered how to manipulate this structure to enhance the material's applications.(SONY DCR-HC96 battery)
The research is published in the June 19 issue of Nature Materials in the Letters article, "Linear coupling of alignment with transport in a polymer electrolyte membrane," by Jing Li, Jong Keun Park, Robert B. Moore, and Louis A. Madsen, all with the chemistry department in the College of Science and the Macromolecules and Interfaces Institute at Virginia Tech.
Nafion is made up of molecules that combine the non-stick and tough nature of Teflon with the conductive properties of an acid, such as SONY Cybershot DSC-T100/R battery acid. A network of tiny channels, nanometers in size, carries water or ions quickly through the polymer. "But, due to the irregular structure of Nafion, scientists have not been able to get reliable information about its properties using most standard analysis tools, such as transmission electron microscopy," said Madsen, assistant professor of physical, polymer, and materials chemistry.
Madsen and Moore, professor of physical and polymer chemistry; Madsen's post-doctoral associate Jing Li; and Moore's Ph.D. student Jong Keun Park, of Korea, were able to use nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)to measure molecular motion, and a combination of NMR and X-ray scattering to measure molecular alignment within Nafion. "We were looking at water molecules inside Nafion as internal reporters of structure and efficiency of conduction," said Madsen. "The new feature we discovered is the locally aligned aggregates of polymer molecules in the material. (FUJIFILM NP-40 battery)The molecules align like strands of dry spaghetti lined up in a box. We can measure the speed (diffusion) of the water molecules and the direction they travel within those structures, which relates strongly to the alignment of the polymer molecule strands."
The researchers observed that the alignment of the channels influenced the speed and preferential direction of water motion. And a startlingly clear picture presented itself when the scientists stretched the Nafion and measured its structure and water motion.
"Stretching drastically influences the degree of alignment," said Madsen. "So the molecules move faster along the direction of the stretch, and in a very predictable way. (PANASONIC NV-MX5 battery)These materials actually share some properties with liquid crystals—molecules that line up with each other and are used in every LCD television, projector, and screen."
These relationships have not been previously recognized in a polymer electrolyte, Madsen said.
The ability to observe motion and direction, and understand what is happening within Nafion, has implications for using the material in new ways, and for designing new materials, the researchers write in the Nature Materials article. Ion-based applications could include actuator devices such as artificial muscles, organic OLYMPUS LI-12B battery, and more energy efficient fuel cells. A water-based application would be improved reverse osmosis membranes for water purification.
Madsen and Moore started this collaborative project shortly after they arrived at Virginia Tech (Madsen in 2006, Moore in 2007), and they are furthering their work together by investigating new polymeric materials using their unique combination of analysis techniques.
"Alignment provides for a better flow of the molecules through the polymer," Madsen said.

AMD A Series Promises Cheaper Performance Laptops, Better Battery Life

a8series AMD A Series Promises Cheaper Performance Laptops, Better Battery Life

AMD has released a new series of APUs, the AMD Fusion A-Series with AMD Vision technology. The A series of APUs (Accelerated Processing Units) is designed to be used in desktop replacement laptops, while keeping the price of the laptop at around $599, and not above $1000. (NOKIA 9110 PDA battery )The A series even promises to be more powerful than Intel’s competing Core i3 Processors in terms of multimedia performance, while managing to be anywhere from $50 to $75 cheaper. In a nutshell, AMD is trying to shake up the desktop replacement category in a similar fashion to the way they are taking on the ultraportable category with the AMD Fusion chips that they have been packing inside laptops like the popular Canon Eos Rebel t2i Battery and Acer batelw80l8 Battery. An APU combines a CPU and GPU together so that they can run along side by side, offloading tasks to one another as necessary. AMD is investing their energies in their APUs with Vision technology because they understand that the future of computing lies in the power of GPU processing. It used to be that developers wrote software that primarily took advantage of just CPU processing, but now that is changing. (Canon Powershot sd40 Battery)Since they launched their first AMD Fusion APU series last year, there have been over 100 apps written that take advantage of GPU processing.
At the high end of the new A series is the A8. This APU packs in a quad core processor that can go head to head with Intel’s Core i7 series. It also features dual discrete graphics courtesy of the GPU built onto the APU, and a second discrete GPU inside of the computer. (Dell Inspiron 910 AC Adapter)A dual discrete graphics configuration inside of a laptop isn’t quite new, but it never has had the potential to become mainstream until now. The new A series chipset also supports USB 3.0 right on it. That means that you can potentially playback video directly off of a connected USB 3.0 compatible camera without choppiness.
Furthermore, the A series also promises great Sony Hdr-fx1 Battery life of up-to 11 hours and it also promises to run cool.  Other features of the A series include the power to run dual display set ups, and the ability of AMD Vision to make HD videos look and play back better by improving the color and visual quality of video playback. We personally got a hands on with some of these new systems running the A series and in comparison to their Intel counterparts, they did indeed run cooler. (Hp Omnibook xt1000 Battery)We did indeed get to see how Vision technology can improve video playback, even on YouTube videos.  AMD is pre-installing their AMD Vision software on computers running on their AMD processors. This software lets you tweak and turn on video display improvement settings, as well as configure settings to fully take advantage of the APU.
AMD has also been talking about their Motion DSP technology for a while now. This tech actively reduces shake and stutter in video. (Canon Legria Hf m306 Battery)They say that eventually they will offer software that does this for video that people produce. Finally, AMD is also setting their sights on improving the video chat experience, which we all know needs much improving. They are working with a company called ViVu to improve the experience of video chat over unstable or not so fast internet connections.
To coincide with this new series of APUs. HP is also releasing a whole bunch of  desktop replacement laptops at more affordable price points, courtesy of this new AMD architecture. (TOSHIBA SATELLITE T3400 DC Adapter )We’re talking about packaging the A series inside of their DV4, DV6, DV7, their colorful G4, G6 and G7 series, as well as their slick new ProBook B and S series.
Overall, the promise of a system that can outperform Intel’s Core i3 series, while managing be more affordable, should be very enticing to consumers wallets – especially, in time for back to school season when there will be surge of interest in budget laptops. (IBM FRU 92P1157 AC Adapter )Between the A series announcement, their plans to start putting their APUs in tablets, and the fact that their chips will be inside of the upcoming Wii U, things are certainly looking up for David vs. Goliath.

In a statement accompanying the product launch, Toshiba said that its new gadget will hit the stores by July 10 and will be powered by Android's Honeycomb 3.1 and designed with maximum regard on portability with its 10.1 inch screen and Jvc Bn-v408 Battery that juice up some eight hours of on-the-go use.
The Thrive comes with dual high-resolution cameras (5MP back-facing and 2MP front-facing) that users will find handy during teleconferencing functions, with image and video renditions in HD fashion that will more than please the general mode of usage, and all packed in a casing that emits crispness and weighs only 1.6 pounds.(Panasonic Vw-vbj10 Battery )
While the new Thrive is not the thinnest tablet around, its added heft paved the way for more connectivity with a host of ports such HDMI, USB, mini USB and SD card slot, which mean that file sharing and pleasurable viewing would be a breeze on the new Toshiba product. (Sony Np-ft1 Battery)
Toshiba vice-president and general manager for digital products division Jeff Barney told CNET that the new Thrive is geared towards users who were planning to migrate from notebook to the now popular smart gadgets.
A review published by CNET on June 2 differentiated the device from the iPad, in which the Thrive allows connectivity to a personal computer, (Sony hi8 Ccd-cr1 Battery)which is a feature absent on the bestselling Apple product, via its Log Me In app.
Toshiba also anticipated customer's propensity to personalize their gadget by issuing the Thrive to come with a removable back plate, allowing users to inter-change the TOSHIBA SATELLITE 200 SERIES Laptop DC Adapter battery cover with available colors such as green, orange, purple, blue, pink, silver and black.
And yes the MOTOROLA V50 PDA battery can be changed, which Toshiba said would be one of the things that set the product apart from other tablets, which the company said can be had staring at $429 at 8GB capacity, $479 at 16GB and $579 at 32GB.
Toshiba's bet on its new product lies on name recall as Barney told CNET that people tend to jump from one gadget into another but not necessarily ditching the brand that served them well, in the same manner that "people want brands they're used to with computing."

Motorola's DROID X2 Is A Weak Update To The Original

I remember seeing the DROID X a year ago and thinking to myself, "Why would anyone need such a gigantic phone?"

As an iPhone user, I had grown accustomed to its 3.5-inch display.
But the DROID X proved that there was a market for big, ( MOTOROLA V50 PDA battery )powerful phones, spawning off 4+ inchers like the HTC Thunderbolt, Samsung's Galaxy S phones, and the mammoth Infuse 4G.
Now we have the sequel to the monster that started it all, the DROID X2.

At first glance, the X2 is practically identical to the original DROID X. It has the same screen size, button layout, and tapered backing.(Hp Compaq Business Notebook 6715b battery) If you expected a full aesthetic refresh, you're going to be disappointed.
The real upgrades are on the inside. There's a speedy 1 GHz dual-core processor, just like the one in Motorola's Atrix 4G. The screen also got a nice boost in resolution.
Just like the Atrix, the X2's dual-core processor adds a lot to the machine. Games with intense graphics (like the Need For Speed demo included with the phone) are smooth and crisp. ( ACER Aspire One Ac Adapter)The phone never choked, even when running multiple apps.
The X2 still has the same 8 MP camera as the original, but that's hardly a bad thing. The DROID X was ahead of its time with such a powerful camera, so it'll be another year or so before we start seeing upgrades.
On it's side, the X2 has a mini HDMI out port, which is excellent for playing video stored on your phone on your HD TV.

Behind The Times

As I said, the original DROID X seemed like a real beast when it launched last year. But since then we've jumped ahead into an era of super-thin, super-light phones. (Acer Aspire 7735z battery)While the X2 is powerful, it still suffers in design. It's thick (even more so at the top by the camera) and much heavier than any phone I've used recently. I wish Motorola could've taken some time to shave off some extra weight.
The OS isn't much different than Motorola's other Android phones. It still runs version 2.2 Froyo, but Motorola promises a Gingerbread update very soon. (The original DROID X already has it.) I'm not entirely sold on Motorola's skin (some of the widgets included are downright ugly), but that can be easily customized.
Battery (NOKIA BLL-3 PDA battery ) life was decent. (I consider any Android phone that can make it through the day on one charge a winner.) However, call quality was pretty bad. I sounded fine to the people I talked to, but on my end it sounded like the person on the other end was talking through a tin can.

Should You Buy It?

If you don't mind a thick or heavy phone, the DROID X2 is a solid bet. It's fast, powerful, and a pretty good deal at $199.99 with a two-year contract.(Acer Aspire 7730z battery)
Current DROID X owners looking to upgrade (there probably aren't many of you) should definitely skip this round though. The improvements in speed aren't enough to justify the purchase this time.

The commission said that since an initial recall in May 2010 and 2009, HP has received additional reports of overheated and ruptured lithium-ion batteries, leading it to expand its recall to include more models.
